I have been in love with clay for almost 30 years. After growing up in Austria and moving to Australia in my early twenties, I discovered ceramics after a friend and neighbour gave me a bag of clay that she had left over. It was love at first touch! I soon enrolled in a TAFE course where I learned some basic skills. I had a two year old at the time so having a creative outlet was both important and slightly frustrating since I felt I couldn’t give clay the attention I wanted to. I kept going and slowly build up my ceramic practice, exhibiting at community based events until I decided to work in ceramics full time, which also coincided with joining Sydney gallery Curatorial+Co.
I use the coiling technique for most of my pieces, which allows me to slowly build up a form and to observe where a piece intends to go, giving up control as much as possible. Marks from the making process of pinching or scraping are left deliberately and the finishes are meant to enhance the raw, organic quality of clay, often consisting of oxides and liquid clay slips.
My inspiration comes from nature. I love spending time in the bush or around the beautiful Northern Beaches where I live and finding little treasures which come in the form of rocks, seedpods, marks left in the sand, shifting moods…
I acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation as the first inhabitants and traditional custodians of the land on which I live and work. I pay respect to Elders past and present.
